WHAT TO EXPECT
This work is about engaging in an exploration of yourself, discovering what you don’t like about your life and finding ways to change it. It can be about healing from trauma, learning how to cope with difficult traumatic experiences and feelings. A lot you discover can be really tough to face. It takes desire, motivation, and hard work to change. It also takes patience, persistence, discipline and a willingness to be uncomfortable. I know this sounds intense and it certainly can be! I’ve spent the last 20 years on my own healing and self-discovery journey. For me, it’s been all of those things and more. But, as the years went by, I felt more comfortable with the process and it is no longer a struggle. Instead, I enjoy the twists in the road, constantly getting to know myself, and feel grateful to be on this path. To me, there is no other purpose in life than uncovering and becoming your true self.
This work will challenge you to look at your ego, and ask yourself tough questions about how you’ve come to see the world and the way you function in it. We all come from a family, community, and culture, as well as take part in a broader society and systems - all of which shape our viewpoint of the world. More often than not, our perception of reality is not actually the truth, nor is it helping us thrive and grow. Self-discovery helps us focus on what we can control, while helping us accept what we cannot control. It can be jolting, tiring, scary, painful and at the same time, fascinating, humorous, rewarding, exhilarating and freeing. It starts with being curious about yourself and others.
I incorporate several modalities, as all of us are unique and good psychotherapy involves creating a blend of approaches that suit different people. My work encourages emotional awareness and connection using mindfulness, somatic, psychodynamic, humanistic/existential, feminist, behavioral and attachment interventions & approaches. Often when clients are struggling with trauma, traditional “talk therapy” approaches cannot work effectively (or as fast) as other healing approaches. To this end, I am also trained in Brainspotting (BSP), which is a brain-based approach that accesses the subcortical brain releasing unprocessed trauma. Brainspotting can help with those experiencing trauma, anxiety, ADHD, anger, phobia, substance use, chronic fatigue/pain, impulse control and sports performance issues.
